Directed by Pello Ruiz Huici, Coral Barañain belongs to a new generation of artists that, without forgetting about their origins, try to create in each concert a magical and thrilling moment that resounds in the heart, mind and skin of listeners for a long time.
Founded in 1982 by a group of music amateurs and neighbors, throughout all these years, Coral Barañain has sung in renowned festivals and music cycles, travelling with choral music beyond our borders, in France, Germany and Italy, where the group sang in a Peace Mass in St Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican on the occasion of the fourth anniversary of 9/11 Attacks.
Open to new musical experiences, Coral Barañain combines classical-religious events, such as the Sacred Music Cycle of Hondarribia, with innovative ideas such as the combination of choral music and astronomy offered in the concert at Pamplona’s Planetarium in 2005 or the organization of four editions of its Choral Jazz Workshop.
In recent years, Coral Barañain has participated in several editions of Musikaste Festival, the Musical Week of Rentería, making a name for themselves in the Spanish choral scene, gathering awards in competitions such as La Mina y La Mar Villa de la Felguera, that of Villa de Avilés or the Choral Competition Antonio Jose in Burgos.
Among its most important achievements are the First Prize and the special award to the best performance of a composition by Tomás Garbizu, “El eco de una habanera”, in the competition of La Antigua in Zumarraga 2011, which gave the group the passport to the final competition series of the National Choral Grand Prix in 2012.
In 2016, Coral Barañain participated in the Choral Competition of Ejea de los Caballeros, winning the award to the Best Conductor, a prize that was presented for the first time in the history of this veteran Spanish contest.
Always attentive to new choral music compositions, uncovering hidden gems in less known repertoires, suggesting new creations to composers. Always hand by hand with the audience, without getting too far away from today’s daily life’s beat, Coral Barañain aims to spread culture, to give away emotions, to provoke reflections, by singing for all ages, in all kinds of spaces and at all kinds of occasions, with the absolute and passionate devotion of each and every one of its members.
We are Coral Barañain because we tell songs and sing stories.
Our dream is to leave no one indifferent.
